Anxiety is the theme of Mental Health Awareness Week

Anxiety is a normal emotion in us all, but sometimes it can get out of control and become a mental health problem. Lots of things can lead to feelings of anxiety, including exam pressures, relationships, starting a new job (or losing one) or other big life events. We can also get anxious when it comes to things to do with money and not being able to meet our basic needs, like heating our home or buying food. But anxiety can be made easier to manage.

Focusing on anxiety for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week will increase people’s awareness and understanding of anxiety by providing information on the things that can help prevent it from becoming a problem. At the same time, we will keep up the pressure to demand change - making sure that improving mental health is a key priority for the government and society as a whole.

In recognition of the importance of mental health when it comes to productivity and safety in construction, ASH Drywall have arranged a number of Mental Health Awareness presentations to site teams for Mental Health Awareness Week. The aim is to raise awareness of mental health issues (and particularly breaking down stigma), focussing on the lack of support for construction workers, who are often self-employed and/or without a traditional workplace “EAP”.

ASH Drywall are also promoting awareness of the Construction Industry Helpline, a free and confidential resource available to anyone working in construction and their families (Callers from the UK dial 0345 605 19656 or text HARDHAT to 85258).

Sean Ash, Legal Director at Ash Drywall, commented that:

“Remember, it’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help when we’re struggling. The truth is, it takes a stronger person to have the courage to speak out and seek support, where needed.”
